��Ѵ��(English) There are two aims in this investigation of the responses by speakersof Thai to favor-expressing speech acts. Firstly, this is an explorationof the refusal strategies used and the relationship between the strategiesand two factors: the types of favor- expressing speech acts, which includesuggestion, invitation, and offer; and the social status of the interlocutors.Secondly, this is an analysis of the role of 'face' to find out whether thespeaker is concerned with his/her own face or that of his/her conversationpartners. Data are collected, using a questionnaire answered by fifty Thaispeakers of various occupational backgrounds. The questionnaire consists oftwo parts: a Discourse Completion Test for collection linguistic strategiesand an inquiry on the speaker's concern about "face". The data show eighteen linguistic strategies used by respondents inrefusing favor-expressing speech acts. They can be divided into the direct,and the indirect type. Direct strategies can be either a direct refusalor a statement about the speaker's lack of the needed ability. As for theindirect type, there are sixteen strategies: reasoning, thanking,comforting the addressee, apologizing, hesitating, congratulating andwell-wish, suggesting, stating desire and feeling, asking for favor,complimenting, pestponing, regret for being unable to comply, expressingdesire to comply, offering an alternative, semi-acceptance, and joking.The choice of these strategies is related to the three types of thefavor-expressing speech acts. The choice of the strategies is also related tothe social status of interlocutors because Thai speakers tend to decide ondifferent strategies while taking into account the role and the power ofconversation participations. In the analysis of role of face, it is found that the speaker is moreconcerned with the nearer's face than with his/her own face. The choice ofstrategies, however, is not relared to the concern about face. The samestrategy can be used in all cases.
