The Sigma A85mm f/1.4 DGHSM doesn’t have any coma-related problems – the shape of the diode is deformed just slightly even in the corners of full frame at the maximum relative aperture. Similarly performed the Milvus 1.4/85 but the Otus 1.4/85 was a tad weaker; on the other hand such models as the Canon 1.2/85, SigmaEX 1.4/85 or the Nikkor 1.4/85G had noticeably worse results.

Astigmatism, understood as an average difference between vertical and horizontal MTF50 function values amounted to just 1.7%. It is a negligible level and, officially, the lowest result of all 85 mm devices we present in this test.

When it comes to the appearance of out-of-focus images we don’t have any reservations. The light spread in circles is very even, without any distinct rims or local extremes. Still the significant truncation of circles in the frame corners is a bit worrisome – it is a trait of mechanical vignetting and we didn’t expect to see it in a test of a lens so big.

Last week, we reported that Sigma had released firmware updates for several of its Global Vision-series lenses. The updates was designed to allow compatibility with Canon’s in-camera Lens Aberration Correction. However, it seems the updates may have had unintended consequences.

A site visitor noticed that after updating his Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens' firmware to v.2.00, his lens exhibited noticeable backfocusing which required a -8 setting at various focus settings to correct via the Sigma USA Dock.

As I had yet to update my own Sigma 50mm Art's firmware, I decided to see if I replicate the issue. I tested the lens' performance on my 5D Mark III and 7D Mark II and the lens focused accurately with no AFMA value applied in-camera or in-lens (via the USB dock) with firmware v.1.00. After updating Sigma Optimization Pro to the latest version, I upgraded the Sigma 50A's firmware to v.2.00. After the upgrade, the lens required a -6 AFMA correction to be applied either in-camera or in-lens (at all focus distances) for accurate autofocusing.

Note that the Sigma 50mm Art lens' AF was advertised as being adjusted in its specific firmware release notes for "an improved focus accuracy during Live View mode."

We're interested to know whether or not the AF recalibration is necessary for all of the lenses whose firmwares were updated, or if it's only the Sigma 50mm Art that's experiencing the issue. So if you have one of the following lenses and you'd like to provide your feedback, apply the latest firmware update and let us know if your lens required recalibration for accurate AF.

The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN, Sony E-mount version, has a firmware update to version .02 as of Oct. 13, 2022. The update is for:

  • "AF assist function during video recording is now supported."

Has anyone been able to run this update on a Mac with macOS 13.1 Ventura (the current OS)? I can't seem to get it done.

Sigma's instruction page says "OS other than mac OS 10.13 / 10.14 / 10.15. are not supported." Perhaps that explains the failure to update. Any way to make it work on the current OS?

I just wasted time this morning trying to copy files between a Sony updater that works and one of the Sigma ones. I am not sure why Sigma is not using the updated installer. I just used a Windows machine instead.

I have the same MacOS version (13.1) and had no problem updating my Sigma 24-70 DG DN. Make sure if you are using USB C to USB C cable (I use 2021 MacBook Pro) get the one that is 3.2 compliant. It could be a cable issue. Hope this helps.
